This collection contains articles, photographs, postcards, genealogical information and biographies of family members. Of special interest is compiled information concerning William Ely's trip from Conn. to North Ala. in 1820 to locate lands deeded to the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb. This portion of the papers include photocopies, maps, correspondence and printed materials. Also of interest are late nineteenth century photographs of Phelan family members, African-Americans, daily life, and street scenes in Montgomery and Birmingham.

The Phelan family resided in Conn. and Ala. Prominent members included circuit judge and Ala. Supreme Court Justice John D. Phelan and his son Judge Ellis Phelan who was Ala. Secretary of State and a probate judge in Hartford, Conn. Ellis Phelan also served as Captain, eventually Major, of Company A of the 45th Ala. during the Civil War.
